Most of the damage happens in the first twenty minutes. Ring first, then work through these.
Stopcock clockwise until it stops. Kitchen cupboard first, then the utility or behind the kickboard in a newer house. Stiff? Stop turning — old brass snaps and that makes everything worse.
One appliance leaking? The pipe feeding it usually has a small valve with a screw slot. A quarter turn stops that one thing and leaves the rest of the house running.
Water travels downwards and sideways. Move anything that matters, get a bucket under the drip, and switch off any circuit it’s heading towards.

If water is escaping and you cannot stop it, ring now. If you’ve isolated it and nothing is getting damaged, morning is usually fine and cheaper. No heating in freezing weather with young children or an elderly relative in the house counts as now. Ring either way and we’ll tell you honestly which it is.

Kitchen sink cupboard in most houses round here. Older terraces sometimes have it in a cellar head or under the stairs, and newer builds often have it in the utility or behind a kitchen kickboard. Turn it clockwise until it stops.
Don’t force it. Old brass stopcocks snap, and a snapped one is a far bigger problem than the leak you started with. Ring and tell us it’s seized — it changes how fast we need to get there and what we bring with us.
